Air Force Pay: Understanding Basic Pay and Allowances
Equal Pay for All Airmen
In the Air Force, all Airmen receive equal base pay based on their rank and years of service. This ensures fair compensation for everyone, regardless of their job or location.
Additional Compensation for Officers
While base pay is the same for all Airmen, officers are eligible for additional compensation based on their rank and years of service. This compensation includes:
- Flying pay: Officers who are pilots or aircrew members receive additional pay for their flying duties.
- Hazardous duty pay: Officers who are deployed to hazardous or dangerous areas receive extra pay.
- Subsistence allowance: Officers who are not provided with on-base housing receive a monthly subsistence allowance.
- Family separation allowance: Officers who are separated from their families due to military service receive a monthly allowance.
Determining Basic Pay
The Air Force uses a pay table to determine the monthly basic pay for commissioned officers. The pay table is based on the officer's rank and years of service. For example, a newly commissioned officer (paygrade O-1) with less than two years of service will earn a monthly basic pay of $3,826.20 in 2024. A more senior officer (paygrade O-4) with over 12 years of service will earn a monthly basic pay of $8,130.90.
