Whitey Herzog, Former Cardinals and Royals Manager, Dies at 92

Hall of Fame Manager Led St. Louis to World Series Title

Whitey Herzog, the Hall of Fame manager who led the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series title, has died at the age of 92.

Herzog, who also managed the Kansas City Royals, died on April 16, 2024, in St. Louis. No cause of death was immediately released.

A native of Belleville, Illinois, Herzog began his baseball career as a player in the St. Louis Browns organization. He later managed in the minor leagues before getting his first major league managing job with the Royals in 1975.

Herzog led the Royals to the American League Championship Series in 1976 and 1977, but they lost both times to the New York Yankees. He was fired by the Royals after the 1979 season.

Herzog then joined the Cardinals as a coach under manager Joe Torre. He took over as manager in 1980 and led the Cardinals to the World Series title in 1982. He also led the Cardinals to the National League Championship Series in 1985 and 1987.

Herzog was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Herzog is survived by his wife, Mary Anne, and three children.
